Comparing Bones
Skeletal System Of a prawn
The skeletal system of a prawn is on the outside of the body meaning it has an exoskeleton. The main features of the skeletal system of a prawn is its hard shell. It goes all the way from the head to the tail. It is very different to our skeletal system as it is found on the outside of the body and is not made of bones but made of chitlin. Another way it is different is that it is divided up into sections to allow more movement. Some benefits of having this structure of skeletal system is that it is very flexible and easy to move. Also, it provides a lot of protection for all of the muscles. On the other hand, the disadvantages are that if the chitlin were to break or crack, there is nothing to protect the muscles and the chitlin would probably not be able to repair for a long time. Another disadvantage is that a prawn can grow out of its shell. If this happens, they shed it and grow a new one but this will leave them exposed for a short time. Insects and other crustaceans also have exoskeletons.
SKELETAL SYSTEM OF A WORM
A worm has a hydro skeleton meaning that it relies on water to move. They have a fluid-filled cavity called a coelom. What happens is the fluid puts pressure on the outside of the coelom which activates muscles to change the shape of the worm and make it move.
Skeletal System of a cuttlefish
In a cuttlefish, the main bone is called the cuttlebone. It is a hard, white bone that is very light. Its main role is to give the cuttlefish structure and keep it afloat (die to its light weight). The cuttlefish has an endoskeleton and the cuttlebone is made of calcium carbonate.
Skeletal System of a Human
The human skeletal system is made up of bone. Its main roles are to provide support, structure and protection for our organs and muscles. Our bones are made of phosphate, calcium, collagen and bone marrow. The role of bone marrow is to produce blood cells and platelets for our body.
When you are a baby, you have 300 bones and when you are a fully grown adult, you have 206. This is because in babies, most of the bones are cartilage. As you grow up, bones fuse together to form bigger bones.
Humans have an endoskeleton as well as other mammals like dogs, monkeys and cats.
